Re: Botticelli's "Birth of Venus"
Venus is coming to shore, blown by temperate winds. When she
steps ashore, newborn, where will she go? How will she get
there? What kind of woman will she become? Hopefully, a
woman of right-mindedness. |

Quartz, Amethyst, Goldplate, Sterling)
Date: March 2003
Size: 25 3/4" x 20" (Framed)
Price: $ 350
Commentary:
"Pharoah" - a term that denotes maleness
Hatshepsut was Ancient Egypt's only female pharoah. She ruled circa
1473 B.C. - 1458 B.C. (18th Dynasty, New Kingdom). One of her greatest
achievements was construction of her temple at Deir el Bahri in the
Valley of the Queens (Luxor). It has been compared in beauty to the
Parthenon in Athens, Greece.
Her patron was Hathor, the Cow Goddess.
The blue faience bead on the leather string is an ancient Egyptian
artifact. Age unknown. |

Commentary:
Veils - bridal veils, burquas, mantles, nuns' veils, beru, mantillas -
have been symbols of femininity for centuries. Do they distort vision
and stifle self-esteem? Or do they demand dignity and respect?
