Title: Moon in the Mirror
Medium: Acrylic w/ Found Object
Date: March 2006
Size: 17" x 32"
Price: $ 600
COMMENTARY FOR "THE MOON IN THE MIRROR"
I found the crib-piece waiting for garbage pick-up on the curb of a
nearby street. It was perfect to represent the lattice work for a
Japanese building.
The woman is a courtesan in the Yoshiwara (a district set aside by the
Tokugawa Shogunate for legal prostitution) in the city of Edo (now
Tokyo). She is looking out the window on summer's evening at the
moon's reflection on the Sumida River.
A haiku on the back of the canvas says:
Edo's
moon
struts by
Fireflies
sprint on breezes near
The
cool Sumida
